Chemistry Experiment - Burning of Magnesium ribbon in air

Experiment : Burning of Magnesium Ribbon in Air


Aim : Classify Physical and chemical changes during the burning of Magnesium ribbon in air.


Theory : 

Physical change : These type of changes take place without changing the composition of substance. In physical change, there is no changes in chemical nature of substance.


In physical change , we observed change in colour ,boiling point , melting point , hardness, density , fluidity , rigidity etc.


The interconversion of state of matter is also a physical change.


Physical changes are changes affecting the form of a chemical substance, but not its chemical composition.


Physical changes are used to separate mixtures into their components compoundsv, but can not usually be used to separate compounds into chemical elements or single compounds.


Example : Heating and cooling 
Many elements and some compounds change from solids to liquidsband from liquids to gases when heated and the  reverse when cooled. Some substances such as iodine and CO2 go directly from solid to gasbin a process called Sublimation.


Chemical Changes : In a chemical reaction reactants react and formed new substance called products. There are changes in chemical properties and composition of substance.


Example : 

2Mg(s)  + O2 (g) --------------> 2MgO 


The properties of reactants is totally different from products . Here, Mg and O2 properties are different from MgO.


Chemical properties cannot be determined just by viewing or touching the substance the internal structure of substances must be affected greatly.


However, a catalytic property would also be a chemical property. Chemical properties can be contrasted with physical properties.



Material Required :
Red litmus paper, Magnesium ribbon


Red litmus paper : litmus is a water soluble mixture of different dyes extracted from lichens.


The main use of litmus is to test whether a solution is acidic or basic.


Red litmus paper turns blue under basic or alkaline solutions.


Apparatus Required : 

China dish , or watch glass , sand paper , Tongs , Bunsen Burner , Match box

 


















Procedure : 
  1. A piece of Magnesium ribbon is taken and rubbed with sand paper to rwmove dust from its surface.

  1. .Magnesium ribbon is hold with the help of a pair of tongs over the watch glass or china dish.

  1. Burning of Magnesium ribbon over Bunsen Burner is observed and ash is collected in watch glass or china dish.

  1. Wet red litmus paper is brought in contact with the white ash collection in watch glass.

Observations : 

  1. When Magnesium ribbon is rubbed with sand paper , it looks silvery white and colour of Magnesium metal is silvery white.

  1. When Magnesium ribbon is burnt. It burns brilliantly and a white ash is left behind and when it burns in air it form magnesium oxide(MgO).

  1. When we brought moist red litmus with contact to Magnesium ribbon ash and Red litmus paper turns blue.

Red litmus paper rurns blue because of basic nature of magnesium oxide(MgO).

Results: 

  1. Magnesium is silvery white metal in nature.

  1. 2. When Magnesium burns in the presence of oxygen it forms Magnesium oxide.

2Mg (s)  + O2(g) -------------> 2MgO(s)


      3. Here , it is direct combination reaction            between Mg and O2.


      4. Magnesium oxide is basic in nature.


      5. Formation of Magnesium oxide is a                   chemical change ribbon.


Precaution : 


1. Magnesium ribbon surface should ne properly cleaned with sand paper.


2. The white ash of MgO should not be touched.


3. Mg ribbon should be hold by a pair of tongs while burning it.


4. Use sun glasses to protect eyes from dazzling light of burning Mg ribbon.
