(1) Mulliken scale :
E. N. = Electron affinity +ionisation potential/ 2
Note = All data present in electron volt (ev)
Electron affiniy : It is the amount of energy, that is released, when an electron is added in the valence shell of isolated gaseous atom.
Ionisation potential : The amount of energy that is required to remove valence electron from isolated gaseous atom is called ionisation potential.
(2). Pouling scale:-
:- it is based on energy data.
:- according to pouling a difference in E.N.
of two atom A and B is given by the following relation :-
Xa - Xb = 0.208√delta
Delta = bond dissociation energy of A &B molecule -√bond dissociation energy of A * bond dissociation energy of B
:- there is a relationship in between pouling & mulliken scale
X(pouling) = x ( mulliken) / 2.8.
X(pouling) = E. A. +I.P/2*2.8
X(pouling)= E.A + I.P./5.6
