Born lande Equation is used to identify the theoritical value of lattice energy.
:- lattice energy is denoted by U.
Note:- The amount of energy that is required to break the one mole of ionic crystal into its corresponding gaseous cation or anion is called lattice energy.
It is used only for ionic compound.
Units :- Kcal/ mole, KJoule/mole ,ev/atom
Lattice energy calculated by two methods:-
- Experimental :- Born haber Cycle
- Theoritical :- Born lande equation
Born -Lande equation:-
U = - Na Z+ Z- e²A/4π€r(1-1/n)
:. U= lattice energy
Z+= charge on cation
Z-= charge on anion.
e²= charge on electron in coloumb
A= medulang constant( its value depends upon the packing of each kind of ions) (coordination no.)
Na= avagadros no. =6.023*10²³
€ = di electric constant of medium
r= interatomic distance
n= born exponent ( its value depends upon the electronic configuration of ions)
